Best wire rigging for a 6 inch action figure

Right now, I am working with 24 gauge aluminum wire, but I discovered that it's far too weak to hold my action figure up, even with a weight plate stabilizing it. I'm thinking about using a (twisted)…Continue

Variable ND filter as a replacement for light dimmer

My lighting setup doesn't have any dimmable light to speak of so I was hoping that this would work as a viable option should the time come. Any supporting or dissuading thoughts?

"I'll have to look up what 24 gauge means, we don't use that measurement here... ok, it's  approx 1.3 mm diameter, a little thinner than I use, and a small difference in wire thickness can make a big difference in how it feels in…"

Best wire rigging for a 6 inch action figure

Right now, I am working with 24 gauge aluminum wire, but I discovered that it's far too weak to hold my action figure up, even with a weight plate stabilizing it. I'm thinking about using a (twisted) thicker gauged wire so it can effectively stay in place. Does anyone have any some suggestions or alternatives?

"Oh! Gotcha. Then I'd absolutely modify the lights with gels and diffusers and other tools rather than messing with your in-camera exposure with a VariND filter. Lee filters makes a nice filter kit you can get on Amazon that's small but…"

"I'm not actually focused on gradual dimming, per se. Rather, I would like to mimic a specific intensity of outdoor light (i.e. overcast light) in my studio to match my BG plates."

"You can, yes. Just be sure you are picking the method that best suits your particular problem. If you want many frames of apparent light dimming it may not be the easiest option; might be one of he cheapest, if you use gels! :-p A proper rheostat…"

"You can get rheostats used for controlling rotary power tools that will work on Lights; will warm color temp as they go down, though. But it's a cheap solution. VariND will require touching the lens barrel so you'd risk camera bumps. It…"

"I think the key to this is shooting a white card, so the camera can adjust if it has those controls. If not, then you have 2 comparable elements to adjust in post."

Best method for color temperature matching: gels or in camera settings

Hypothetically, I shot a live action background plate outdoors for a short, but can't shoot my puppet outdoors. While in the studio, I have a decision to make, employ gels that match the color temp. in the footage or go to my camera's settings to punch in the number and work normally? Does anyone have any similar experiences and can you spare some advice?

Stop Motion Character Stands

I'm currently in the pre-production stage of doing my first major stop motion short. It's mainly a piece centered around Northern Soul dancing which involves certain moves that require a great deal of balance on the character's part. Right now, I'm trying to find all of the right tools needed to carry out this endeavor. Here's a clip of Northern Soul dancing in actionhttp://youtu.be/7c_Pk0p8ZVMI already know that Helping Hands are invaluable for…See More
