What type of paint should i use to paint latex?

can i paint on it with regular paint? what kind of paint?  sorry...

I'm trying to make a "build-up" puppet, but i'm having trouble with the latex skin, its liquid latex, white out of the box, but it keeps getting that transparent condom color, LOL

hello, theres quite a few way of painting latex, but the way i was taught was to mix de-ironised water with gouache paint and then to poor so much of it into liquid latex, depending on how much you poor in depends on how transparent it would be. my martian rex was painted this way but instead of painting it on i used a sponge to stipple the paint job. you can also use this water/paint/latex mix to spray it onto your puppet using cheap hobby spray kits, but you need to make sure you have allot of air pressure behind it and something to unclog the nozzle as it will clog up every minute you spray

hope this helps you?

U can mix normal acrylic paint with the latex, the color will be lighter because of the wet latex, when it drys the color will be darker. Ammonia thins the latex out.

If you're going to use acrylic paint on latex, add pros-aide to the paint before painting it on. Look up 'pax paint' online if you want more information. The pros-aide is a type of adhesive that helps the acrylic stick to the latex and keeps it from cracking when you bend the puppet. It's also advised to dust the puppet after the paint has dried with talc to remove the stickiness and avoid tearing from handling it.

Thanks guys!

Ill go try It out!

I have been using a latex paint from a hobby shop! Works LIKE A CHARM!
Its amazing, its a mixture of latex and acrylic (obvious) and comes in small containers!

but the skin color I made it from liquid latex and acrylics, though its a little hard finding ammonia... Can i use AJAX? Window cleaner? :P

To find concentrated ammonia here requires a permit, since it is a component used in making bombs.  I imagine getting hydrogen peroxide would be equally difficult, for the same reason.  Dang terrorists!

Yeah... i think i can get some ammoniac!
that would be ammonia mixed with water = ammoniac?!?!? right?

i dont think so, just ammonia, liquid latex rubber and acrylic paint, make shure to mix the paint, and latex before adding the ammonia or else the paint will clump up.

That latex paint is probably 50/50 or somthing, when u mix it yourself its majority latex, and the color is still strong enuf, because the latex drys translucent. plus its cheaper.

Hydrogen peroxide requires a permit in your area??!  Wow!

Bernardo, I'm not sure where you're located but I finally found pure ammonia at a drugstore (Walgreens to be exact). It's in the cleaning aisle. Don't make the same mistake I did; the first time I bought it I accidentally got the stuff with a lemon scent. It was yellowish, while pure ammonia is clear like water. The yellow stuff left little pock marks all over my latex parts due to whatever impurities were in it. That's probably what would happen with your Ajax and window cleaners, but you could always experiment.

I'm curious: with that latex paint you are using, how does it work when the piece is bent and stretched? I would fear it would crack or fall off... That's the whole purpose for Pax Paint

Wow, I'm not sure where you're located, but I can easily get ammonia either in a drugstore like Duane mentioned (Walgreens) or at a few hardware stores, without a permit as well. Hydrogen peroxide is also very easy to get in my area.

Ammoniac is either a gum resin, or something containing or similar to ammonia. Ammonia mixed with water is just diluted ammonia, it's not actually changing the chemical structure of the ammonia.

I think this is the video Ben is referring to. 1:19 is when he begins painting.
