Hey Guys!

Its been a while but I have been hard at work on KUBO and the 2 Strings at LAIKA.

I just am dropping in to let you guys know that I have been taking private stopmotion animation students on recently and it has been working great!!

I have been working through {Skype - Dropbox and email with Much success.}

I am thinking of opening it up to some more people if any are interested in learning from a LAIKA feature animator?

....I am doing a 12 week course on the Fundamentals of animation or a Custom 12 week course on what you would like to work on.

If any of you are interested ......please contact me at  -      justin_rasch@hotmail.com

If anyone is on the fence about this I say do it! Justin is a great guy and super talented. :)

Justin is a brilliant animator (I am slightly bias having supported his Kickstarter Campaign of "Dogonauts - Enemy Line").

I imagine his teaching is equally brilliant.

Yes, agree with everything said here!  I could learn a lot from him on character animation.

Thanks a ton guys!!

I am really really enjoying teaching stopmotion. It is incredibly cool to

see other animators GROW and feel that MAGIC of giving LIFE to these puppets!

If I could afford it, y'know...I'd take your class.

I've just emailed Justin to find out if I can afford it!

I'll be starting the course in a couple weeks! I'm so excited to be working with Justin. This opportunity came at the perfect time for me.

Buckner,

Good luck with the course. I'm going to start a bit later once I have my studio in order and have made a suitable puppet. Keep us posted on your progress.

Kit

In order to ensure that, when I start the course with Justin, I have a puppet which is good enough that any shortcomings are down to the workman and not his tools, I have ordered an 'Armacreature' armature from Animationtoolkit in the UK.

My plan is to produce a lightweight, 1/6 scale, ordinary humanoid puppet using upholstery foam for the bulk of the body etc. with fabric clothes over the top. Can anyone recommend a particular type of foam and a supplier in Australia for this purpose?

Kit

Actually a good supplier is an old sofa cushion picked up from a yard sale for a dollar or 2. Can be nicely cut using an electric knife like they sell for carving up turkeys. As long as the foam isn't all torn up or crumbling it should be fine. Squeeze the cushion and make sure it's a solid block of foam and not little torn up bits. Or you could hit up a fabric store or craft supplier for some upholstery foam.

Strider,

Thanks for that. I wasn't sure if there was a specific type of foam that was the best option. We have a charity shop here in Exmouth so I'll look in there. Otherwise I'll have to wait until I fly to Perth in a couple of weeks time or look online. One of the penalties of living on the edge of nowhere.

Kit

You should also try to pick up some athletic pre-wrap or under-wrap from a sporting goods store. It might have other names as well - it's a very thin foam bandage used under tape by boxers, and probably a few other athletes. Extremely handy stuff. But I don't want to derail Justin's thread. You might want to start a thread for puppet creation.
