Here is a list of known issues and problems with the new site.  Please add to this list if you find more.

Message Board:  No emoticons.  Renamed Forum to Message Board on top tab but can't figure out how to change it on right sidebar, still reads as Forum.

Uploaded movies: uploaded videos don't appear on the iPad, or in Chrome browsers.  Just a black empty space.

Photos:  slideshow doesn't work on iPad (Flash?)  Just a black empty space instead

Facebook:  integration is spotty.  sometimes the post will appear on FB, sometimes when clicking on the link the following message will appear on FB:

Sorry

The link you are trying to visit has been reported as abusive by Facebook users. To learn more about staying safe on the internet, visit Facebook's Security Page. Please also read the Wikipedia articles on malware and phishing.

This matter will be resolved eventually, it just might take awhile to get it working correctly. I received this response from the HELP Dept today:

Sorry to hear you're encountering difficulty here. There is actually currently an issue with sharing content to Facebook where Facebook is blocking our links as spam. Please rest assured that our Policy and Safety team is working on contacting Facebook in order to resolve this issue. I'm not sure what is involved in order to clear this up, but we will do our best to get things working properly again. Thanks for your patience as we look into resolving this issue.

Not sure if this is helpful, but I've just enabled the ability to Sign In using Google or Yahoo.

That's great but, maybe not for me... If I were to sign in with Yahoo, I would have a whole different avatar and it would reveal my real identity as opposed to the stop-mo Super Hero you guys know me as here on SMA. (that plus my Yahoo avatar and screen name are politically charged. Yikes! don't wanna touch that hot rock here! )

It is ok Ron, we already know you are the Evil Mastermind behind a global plot to unleash hordes of mutant stop-motion monsters into the world. . .

I just thought I would pop in here and offer any help I can on things. By profession I am a computer programmer and my day job I deal with PHP and MySQL all day. So if there is anything I can do to help get the old forum archived and viewable let me know. I have had to convert many forums from one type to another in the past for clients.

Thanks for the offer Shea.  I'll let you know if additional help is needed with the archive.

Martin, - if that were true, I would use the same avatar there and here...  but my plan to take over the world with stop motion monsters is already widely known publicly. (my OTHER evil plans are still under wraps )

Not a problem. I just thought I offer because it doesn't have to be kept or converted into another forum software. It can even be converted into static pages that are still searchable and all the old links that are internal can be converted to connect properly with what ever the final archive format ends up being. So what ever the needs are for it just let me know because it can be done.

My concern is that the idea of making the threads searchable misses the real point:  what is needed is to organize the material, grouping similar information together which is currently scattered in threads which do not have anything to do with them.  Searching can bring up masses of information which, while obstensibly belonging together lexically, becomes just another way of pushing around unintelligible masses of information, especially with a dataset as large as SMAs.  Data is not Information, and Information is not Knowledge.

A first step towards a more useful knowledge tool would be to run a program which identifies statistically significant words and phrases, then use these phrases to start to sort the resultant data for further analysis.  I have a feeling that only by manually digging through the threads will it be possible to bring useful information unrelated to the thread topic to the fore so it can be organized with related information.

The idea is not to have this information take the place of the old message board, but to use it as an adjunct to it.

Long story short, searches which will result in massive results will be unusable.  Only by being adept at constructing boolean searches will this (possibly) allow some kind of really useful result, and this is either beyond the skills of most on this board, or if not, might be seen as being too much trouble.

This is a prediction, and I might be wrong.  Hopefully I am, but decades of professional dbms programming work has taught me that the problem may well raise its ugly head.

I appeal to whoever ends up making the original message board data available to enable bots to search and spider the database so I, and others interested in this question, can try to massage data (downloaded from the site, not touching the site data, of course!) to make the KNOWLEDGE captured by the board available to all.

Natural language processing on this scale is not perfect and even the best Markovian chain systems will still have issues. Human language in pure text is not as procesable as relational databases that already have their potential linkages already broken into columns. Context based searches only work as well as your model you base your processing on and even systems like OpenCyc can only get you so far. Even looking at statistically significant words and phrases will not get what you may think. Even with combinatorics and Zipf's law one would see that most of the value details of knowledge transfer, even if we as humans view it as specific, is almost equal on the signal-to-noise ratio based on the common component parts of speech we use.

Just to add MartindeMadrid I am actually on your side of your point of view if I happen to come across differently than what I am trying to express.

Some technical geek speak here & a little beyond my grasping. There was a big problem (IMO) with old site & I rambled a long time ago, that search engines could not index the site, specifically the messageboard. I'm guessing something got corrupted. Anthony was also perplexed.

Even saving the old messageboard in its similar existing format in archive form and FIXING the bot/spidering search engine problem, would be a mega-BIG improvement. Google for example, has search tools where you can setup template for site specific searches. Sure, it would be nice to reorganize old forum by subject or topic, but that seems like a HELL of a lot of work.

My preference is to archive as is but have a damn good archive search feature. If some are not able to effectively search archives, I am sure other members would help with archive search matters.

Why isn't Paul M. chiming in on this topic? Isn't he the one who is attempting to archive the ol forum?

Yeah I am sorry I got techy there. It is a habit more so from work than anything. I guess the point of it all is yes that it is a lot of work no matter what route you go to have all the features everyone would want. It really comes down to what people will accept as comfortable enough. Everyone organizes and filters differently so having a system that would fit eveyone's exact desires would be costly if not feasable. But there is always close enough.
