While watching a youtube video, pause it and then use the < and > keys to step through the frames.

You can also easily step through .mov videos with the left and right keys.

Well... a computer of some kind might help a bit.

Mov files are easy, you can step through them. (Well, on a computer.)  I load into QT, or an editing program like Final Cut Pro or Da Vinci Resolve (free from Blackmagic), or into TV Paint.

I used to be able to capture broadcast video or vhs tapes with a Perception Video Recorder card and analog input so I could use them on my computer, but that PC died a few years ago.  I can get video files from a DVD using a DVD drive, and converting the files to QT, though it doesn't work on copy protected commercial DVDs.  I don't know how to get streaming video into a format I can use.  A couple of short films I downloaded for a small fee were copy protected, I can play them any time but I can't convert them into any other format so my editing programs can load them.

I haven't had much luck with Youtube.  Hitting the forward arrow does not advance one frame, it jumps ahead a random amount.  If I download a video and convert (I used MacX Youtube Downloader last time) I get dropped frames and repeated frames.  Somehow they play ok, but when I go through a frame at a time they are a mess.  This is even true of my own films, which I know i shot on ones at 25 fps, the format used by Youtube compresses and takes away some of the info on individual frames.   I tried that with running horses so I could work out the gait, but none of the videos were any use.

Hi guys, just to clarify, it is not the forward and back arrow keys that work on youtube.  It is the "," and "." keys that also have the "<" and ">" above them.  Those advance youtube videos one frame at a time.
