Here is a link about it.

But does it do animation?

I feel skeptical.

heh-heh! I just saw this tonight too, linked from No Film School! The fact that it is 720p in h264 is a big time deal breaker for me, but hopefully this kind of thinking will continue to develop and give new life to old Super 8mm cameras. I remember getting super-excited when I first heard about the Digital Bolex, but let down when I realized it was a completely new camera instead of a digital " roll of film ". I guess that it's too much to ask that one day somebody invents a digital system to fit the film mag for a CP 16 !!!

As far as NoLab goes, you are WAY better off sticking with a still camera for shooting animation.

For nostalgic reasons it would be fun to get my old Sanyo operational again. It took six months of getting up at 4 in the morning every day to deliver newspapers to get it in my hands the first time.

I still have a 16mm Bolex, but My Fuji Single-8, an alternative to the super 8 format, is long gone.
I would have liked to see a film replacement digital sensor for 35mm still cameras, but when finally I did read about one the sensor size and resolution were too small, and I was already on my second DSLR. Same with this, 720p is not good enough when many phone cameras, iPads, compact cameras and DSLRs can shoot 1080 video. And by now I have got used to the cropping and zooming options in post that you get when shooting animation with stills at much higher than HD video resolution. And to the quality you can get when the images do not have to be heavily compressed to capture at video speeds. Too little too late for me.

If this cartridge is cheaper than a Digital Bolex or even low grade camcorder from Best Buy, it might be worth it. Giving new life to old tech is pretty cool. I like that it'll have film looks built in. Now if it could record in RAW CinemaDNG, they'd really be on to something!
