Hey guys, im making a compass for a prop in my film and I want to be able to animate it a little. Just have the ability to move the dials. I posted a pic of my working compass but I can't for the life of me find a solution on being able to animate the dials easily. Any good solutions for this problem?

I had to animate a clock - the kind with brass bits that sits inside a glass dome - so I had to remove the dome to move the hands each frame, then replace the dome. You might need to do something similar with your compass, move it by hand, and be able to remove the glass cover and replace it accurately.
Better, instead of removing the glass, have a rod with the needle on it poke out the back where you can turn it. Otherwise, if it was a real magnetic compass, would you be able to place a magnet just out of view to attract it? I don't know how close it would need to be to have an effect.

Have a second pointer on the back. It can be held in place with blu-tack.

herm...what is the problem is it speed?

Okay plan:

I'm going to get a magnet and put like a needle on it and then put some air drying clay around the magnet to resemble a compass.

Hoping it works

The needle SHOULD just stick to the magnet and I can move it about as I please

Can you animate a real compass by positioning a magnet near by? I suppose it depends on the look you want from the compass (and how small a compass you can buy). But if you can get a small enough one you can dress it with a bit of clay. That way as the puppet turned the compass could keep facing the same direction without repositioning the needle. Ok.. probably over kill, but a fun solution.
