Wrought iron gates

Started this discussion. Last reply by Maureen Z Mar 6. 8 Replies

Here's a pic of some gates I have just finished for my film. They are about 200mm high and made using thin aluminium bent rather like full-size wrought iron, and glued with superglue. Frames are in…Continue

Eyebrow paddles

Started this discussion. Last reply by Simon Tytherleigh Feb 3. 2 Replies

I wonder if I can tap the collected SMA brains on the subject of eyebrow paddles, which I am not doing too successfully just now.I have used T shaped paddles with a little bit of epoxy putty on the…Continue

Using cushion foam with silicone

Started this discussion. Last reply by Simon Tytherleigh Oct 1, 2018. 8 Replies

I meant to do this some time ago, but here is the result of my little experiment. The problem: silicone can be very heavy and bounces back into position when it is quite thick. There is a silicone…Continue

EVA foam helmets

Started this discussion. Last reply by Greyguy Feb 9. 6 Replies

I thought I would add a couple of pics on here to show some helmets I have made from 2mm EVA foam. They are glued together with contact adhesive, then coated with thinned PVA to fill the texture and…Continue

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Roo Nelo's discussion Possible camera issue causing misaligned frames?
"It does sound like it might be a camera issue, as you seem to have eliminated everything else as a problem. Is it an old camera, as some are only good for about 50,000 shutter releases? The only way to test is to borrow someone's and compare. I…"

"You can also take a movie of someone doing the action and use that as the line-up layer to get timings. Nick Park does that for all his shots apparently!"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Jet Zhang's discussion Respirator for working with foam latex
"What you need is a fume mask, which filters out the nasties. But you can go a long way to making life better for yourself by opening a window and positioning a fan so it blows the fumes away from you."

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Sergio Roda's discussion Need help with Stop Motion college work Part 2.
"If your budget is low, then for the mushroom I would definitely go for a cushion foam with armature inside - don't forget you need something to grip when it is on set - smoothed out with some physio wrap and then coated with builder's…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Sergio Roda's discussion Need help with Stop Motion college work Part 2.
"1. The great thing about making latex hands is that you never have to worry about getting the wires in the right place, as you are building up the surface. Sculpting for silicone hands is fiddly and making the mould delicate and time-consuming. But…"

"Shoulder blades were a bit of a challenge, so I made a t-shaped hollow plaster mould and slush moulded them. I followed the way you made boots, so there's your influence in another context! For much of the other flesh I used physio wrap …"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Tatu P's discussion Bearings for moco camera head
"Thanks. That looks good. I have used an old PC case to enclose mine. There just isn't a neat way to do the wiring! I have used 4 pin aviation sockets and plugs for my connections to the steppers, so I can unplug the unit easily. But the costs…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Tatu P's discussion Bearings for moco camera head
"This is interesting. Why did you decide to use the RAMPS shield? I just used a Mega 2560 and connected it directly to black box drivers. I did find the jumper wires rather feeble and wobbly, but mostly they work ok. Does the shield mean you can…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Tatu P's discussion Bearings for moco camera head
"Nice work, Tatu. It is very satisfying getting these steppers to do some hard work for you! Did you see Edu Puertas YouTube video? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tXef1zVm2Xg Your results are looking good. Fire seems very hard to get right."

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Sergio Roda's discussion Need help with Stop Motion college work
"Here we are. A couple of stills. I have only animated that short clip so far, but it seemed to go well. They have ball and socket armatures and are able to stand on their hind legs. I think the paler fur works better for the mangy effect."

"There are several videos on YouTube showing how to make doll wigs. These use a base of stretchy material with either latex or PVA, then glue on the hair wefts. For your skin, if it is latex, you can just apply the wefts directly with liquid latex,…"

"Wow, that puppet has huge arms and hands. So even though the body is about 210mm tall, it has to support arms with a total span of about 700mm. I hope you are using plenty of wires to be able to hold them up, and keeping the hands as light as…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Aksel's discussion What kind of latex?
"Latex and silicone are really quite different, and it is difficult to say one is better than the other without knowing the context. I like using silicone for character heads, and it makes good-looking hands too. But latex is great for monsters,…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Hani's discussion Face armature
"If you alsoause a thin wire coming out of the top of the head and resting in a groove in the mould, that would locate the armature better in a foam mould."

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Adam Loomis's discussion Looking for Armature Inspiration
"Hi James. Have a look at the Machine Mart catalogue. A micro milling machine is £478.80 and a small metal lathe is £695. I reckon you can get a lot of excellent ball joints from animation toolkit for that sort of money! What I do is buy…"
