Here is our stop motion film for THE SHINS track: The Rifle's Spiral.

The film mixes traditional puppet animation with 2D paper hinged animation. It was shot at our stages in Ojai CA. We shot with the Canon 5D, and 7D and 60D using Dragonframe software. For moving shots we used a rig called the Volo by ARC Motion Control (arcmoco.com). We also used a nice camera slider by Dito Gear.

Best magic trick ever! The animation where the magician was falling was so well done. How did you make it look so flawless?

This video is absolutely beautiful. The character design and animation have such a wonderful style, and the magician's falling/tumbling sequence makes for a perfect climax.

Cheers,
Damien

I asked Mike Johnson to talk about his experience animating that shot, here is what he said:

I’m glad you like the shot. I was kinda nervous going in because it had been a while since I’d done any animation, and I’ve never shot at 15 fps before, but it was a lot of fun and I was pleased with the final result.  I think the shot works for several reasons:  Jamie gave clear, specific direction and he edited it in a way that accentuates the animation.  Also, Anthony helped me assemble a sweet rig from his collection of Berkey System parts that allowed multi-axis control of the puppet as it tumbled head over heels in front of a green-screen. For a shot like this, rigging is everything.  Finally, I really enjoy animating fast, bold movement. Some animators prefer working on subtle, understated performances, but animating finicky drifts and holds tends to drive me crazy. I like big action stuff.

Thanks,

Mike J
