My wife, Susan, and I were visiting Madrid last year, and Adrian Encinas and his associates kindly offered to interview me talking about stop-motion and the feature film Susan and I are making.  They did a really great job.  Thanks, Adrian!

Hope you like them, Russell.  They have been marginally successful; some people liked them, some didn't.  You should try to find Susannah Shaw's book, "Stop-Motion: Craft Skills for Model Animation" (Focal Press).  It's an outstanding reference on the art form.

Tom,

Great interview - it gave me the uplift I needed after 7 hours of failed stop-motion animating went down the tube.

Tom, is the spring housing to serve as a muscle to help the foam turn with the wrist?

Comment by Russell Jeschke on October 23, 2012 at 6:45pm

that is a very ingenious way of making the radialis! is the wrist joint strong to keep the spring from 'springing' back or is it a low tention spring??

Comment by Tom Brierton on October 23, 2012 at 7:05pm

Hi Ron,

Yes, that's correct.  That's the idea anyway.

Hi Russell,

Yes, the the wrist is strong enough to withstand the pull of the spring.

Using springs for radials or tendons is an idea I got from Jim Danforth.  He used tension springs on the back of his JANA elephantine armature's legs to suggest tendons that move beneath the foam.  I'm not sure that this spring application will work on the 8-armed oracle armature, only because I've not covered the armature yet with silicone to test it.  But the theory seems plausible.
