Stop Motion News - New Stop Motion/CGI Technology discussed

In today's brand new concept. Stop Motion News. I talk about a new technology on the market soon called SMODO. This is combining Stop Motion and CGI together...

I'm just an interested amateur. I don't know anything about the professional industry except what I've seen and heard in various media. But if I had to guess, I'd say that SMODO isn't aimed at individuals or even very small studios -- I would say that it is aimed at medium to large animation studios having to make 13 seven-minute episodes in six months or whatever for TV channels. It looks to be aimed at maximum speed and with minimum regard for any hand-finished look. In my opinion it already looks bland and lifeless, like lots of kids' animation shows, but I'm sure that isn't going to stop people making money with it.

Yeh I think you’re right John. Though I still think big companies wouldn’t go to the trouble of wasting space to have these systems in place. Instead of just using skilled CGI animators who know the technology. It’s a great gimmick. But that’s all for me? It’s a great topic though. I’m sure plenty of people will want to see it in action and love to try it too.

Well, the beauty of this system (if you can call it that) is that you probably wouldn't need a skilled CGI animator...

This seems like a big waste to me personally, a gimmick like you said Peter. It's easier to just animate in a 3d software than set all this up. You still have to build the 3d armature. This is just motion capture software after all.... If you can animate stop motion armatures, you can easily learn to animate 3d armatures. Plus SMODO only has a 3ds Max plugin, which is from my experiences the worst 3dcc software. It would have been much better if they started with Maya. Also, there is a 3dcc called Modo... Why don't companies search the internet before naming their products lol. I also guess that Poland has mostly stop motion animators? That's the target audience I take it?

Yeh it’s all a bit strange. Maya or even Blender with it being free. Especially if they’re “trying to cut budgets” which I don’t agree is the case as I’ve stated in the video. I’m so happy people are behind me on this. After all. CG has a place but so does Stop Motion. More so than ever before. Thanks to software and equipment making it more accessible. But NOT ruining the Stop Motion style we all love. Which is showing the work produced in its raw format. We love it because you can almost see the hours taken to manipulate it and shoot it frame by frame. I suppose you could say my news idea has been a success. I just need a load of other good news to add into my next episodes haha
