Can't get my lens to focus

Hi all! Hope you can help. I am working on a paint-on-glass project on my multi-plane animation stand, and I can't get my lens to focus perfectly. This is the best I can get:…Continue

Tess Martin replied to Tess Martin's discussion Cannot adjust exposure
"Hi Nick, Thanks for your answer. To be honest after switching out my manual lens with my digital kit lens and then back, the problem vanished. I suspect it indeed had something to do with the connection between the lens and the body. If it comes up…"

StopmoNick replied to Tess Martin's discussion Cannot adjust exposure
"Sorry, didn't see this back when you posted it. When I used Nikon lenses on a Nikon body, I partly unscrewed the lens so the camera can't open up the lens between exposures.  I suggest, since the aperture does stop down on the lens…"

Cannot adjust exposure

I'm using a Nikon D5300 with a Manual Nikkor 28mm F/3.5 lens.I've been using this set up for years without a problem but recently noticed that when I rotate the camera's aperture ring (physically) it produces no change in aperture in the shots. I've removed the lens and changed the aperture while looking down into it, and the blades are physically moving. However, when I reattach the lens and take a few shots with the camera in Manual (but not hooked up to the laptop), the photos are all the…See More

"This guy has reviewed a lot of Nikkor lenses -   https://kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikkor.htm Issues like edge sharpness would be just as important to still photographers, so there is a chance you can get info on that for various lenses.…"

"Oh, I just realized, I think most if not all CCTV and security cam lenses use a C-Mount, so would be too small to use on a DSLR. Face-palming hard right now - sorry!! "

Strider replied to Tess Martin's discussion Can't get my lens to focus
"I just remembered I have a blog post with some details about how I used cropping. I was using a lens that didn't get full coverage for my camera's sensor, the image ended up being a small circle in a black rectangle. Biut I was able to…"

Strider replied to Tess Martin's discussion Can't get my lens to focus
"Thanks Anthony, that was quick! It's good to know the team is responsive.  If you're looking at the really wide lenses and don't want distortion, you want what are called Rectilinear wide angle lenses. That means the image…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Tess Martin's discussion Can't get my lens to focus
"Most lenses work best in the middle of their aperture settings, so around f8 to f11. This would help establish how much the focus drops off towards the edges. It should be very little for a prime made by Nikon. I wonder if the closeness of the…"

Tess Martin replied to Tess Martin's discussion Can't get my lens to focus
"Yes, I used a focusing card to determine that the effect (less focus on the edges) is lessened when the artwork is farther from the lens. And I also adjusted the artwork to match the new level/placement in the field. Feels a bit like a band-aid, I…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Tess Martin's discussion Can't get my lens to focus
"Obvious point, perhaps, but a focusing card would show when it is sharp, and might be helpful to show where the edge sharpness drops off."

StopmoNick replied to Tess Martin's discussion Can't get my lens to focus
"A thought - a DSLR will take a much bigger image than you need for HD video, and many bigger than 4k as well.   What resolution will you finish the film in?  So you could move the animation in from the outside edge, and plan to crop the…"

Strider replied to Tess Martin's discussion Can't get my lens to focus
"Ah of course - I failed to think of the fact that things toward the edges will be harder to focus/won't look as good in general, but that's absolutely true. One way you could try to deal with it is by shooting wider than you need and then…"

Tess Martin replied to Tess Martin's discussion Can't get my lens to focus
"Thanks for your reply! I got some ideas from another paint-on-glass animator, and tried a number of other things. I think it is a combination of: 1. the lens focusing more precisely on the center of the field than on the edges 2. the backlighting…"

StopmoNick replied to Tess Martin's discussion Can't get my lens to focus
"I'm baffled too.  In theory you should be able to get a sharp focus on just the dog drawing, since it is flat, with any aperture.  (As long as you are not closer than the lens is able to focus - I don't think the 28mm is a macro…"
