We're just winding down on a new series at work and its becoming unusually quiet, so I came up with a really simple idea for a short mini series.  The idea was to make it as simple as possible, one set and a couple of easy to make characters.

My idea was about a robot and a crab living on a small remote island, so I quickly mocked up the robot character.

Turned out okay but I don't like the hands - they where just a quick bodge job.  Anyway I showed to my producer who liked the idea, but wanted me to move the story away from an island setting and suggested the moon.

I came up with a story more suited to that environment, using the robot and a small alien instead of the crab.  I'm now going to try and remake the robot better (without the rust this time) and mold up some hands.  I've said the idea would be quick and simple to make so hopefully it'll be finished in a few weeks! Gulp!!

Cool little robot, if you ask me.

Cute little guy just as he is!  And making something worn and rusted adds character, as well as letting you get away with a quicker and rougher build.  I hope the new version isn't too pristine, and still has some of that character.  More mechanical looking hands would be a good thing.

Island setting sounds ok, but I guess that does mean you have to deal with the ocean in the background of just about every shot.

Glad you like him!  I'm going to miss the rusty look but I'm moving the setting into outer space, so it makes sense.  It's also kind of a pilot for a children's series idea, although I'm treating more as a stand alone short - if anything more comes of it that would just be a bonus.

The ocean thing was a big a worry for me I was trying to think of something stylistic like thisbut that wouldn't work for waves lapping on the shore.  I'm still puzzling over it - even though I don't have a beach setting anymore! (blue towels/sheets with rollers underneath, sliding flat plastic layers stacked on top of each other, small plastic balls covered in ky jelly rolling back and forth...)
