A non-profit contacted me to help teach a group of middle school girls all the tricks of the trade of stop-motion and make a 30 second PSA within the scope of one semester. It immediately seemed like an impossible feat, but I found myself saying yes and now, very luckily, involved in a fantastic program.
The idea is to teach the girls about dating violence along with the stop-mo art. This is a completely under-addressed and overly-prevalent issue in our modern society. 1 in 5 women are affected by it. I think I learned about it as a footnote in a class between learning how to balance my check book and feed my pets. These girls will go on to spread their voice, but more importantly, I think their work on this PSA will help raise the issue to others.
The spot we are creating is stylistic and rich in symbolism. Wordless and moody, without being dark, overwrought or disturbing. Myself and the non-profits organizer wrote the script and the girls helped us design the scenes. There are 10 of them and they are rotating through all the roles of production.
We have received some grants, but after purchasing cameras, computers, dragonframe and all the other sundries needed for our beloved artform, we don't have enough to keep going and are foregoing paying ourselves. This is a labor of love and need and we would like to see it continue after this semester. If you can give just $2, please do. It would truly go towards a good cause. If you can't give now, please comment to give us your support and keep this campaign on the front page, so that maybe someone who is in a position to give can see it.
Thank you all sincerely,
