"I solder to threaded rods sometimes, but the hole in the ball isn't threaded.  I just treat it like an unthreaded shaft.  For 6-32s I'll file down the threads a little - clear is .140", so I'll use .125" hole."

"Hi Stuart,I think if you got hold of some threaded balls the idea is probably that you could use loctite thread lock instead of silver soldering them to a rod. However, I'd say that is not really a good idea for ball and socket armatures.…"

How to silver solder with threaded pieces...

I've used silver solder to solder to put together non threaded pieces, that seemed straightforward. I just put in some flux a couple of snips of silver solder, heated the whole thing up until the solder melted, and inserted the rod. With threaded balls/all thread can I just braze them? Like coat the threads with flux, screw in the all thread, heat it up then touch some of the silver solder to it? Will the flux suck the silver solder down into the threads?Just looking for some pointers before a…See More

"Yes its for a puppet hat. I'd be interested in hearing more about your foam latex hat. I've shy'd away from foam latex in the past for some reason. The one you did above looks good, so maybe its time for me to dive in."

Stuart Bury replied to Hannah Garcia's discussion Is asking 300$ for a ball and socket armature puppet (from scratch) enough?
"For a custom armature $300 is cheap. But it depends on the design, the experience of the builder, and their willingness to do the project. That being said you can go to http://www.animationtoolkit.co.uk/armature-parts/ and buy ball and socket…"

"Hmmmm, good question. I would think that contact adhesives might be the way to go, like Barge Cement or E6000, but I'm really just guessing. I know cosplayers use those glues to make their flexible costume parts. "

Felt Cowboy Hat

I'm trying to make a Boss of the Planes style cowboy hat. I've been looking and looking for some very thin felt fabric but can only find very thick fabric. Does anyone know of a material that could look similar? My google-fu has turned up nothing.I thought about making out of chipboard and covering with grass flock, then painting it to the color I wanted. Has anyone used grass flock for anything besides grass? I guess I'll try it out and get back to you guys.See More
