Wrought iron gates

Started this discussion. Last reply by Maureen Z Mar 6. 8 Replies

Here's a pic of some gates I have just finished for my film. They are about 200mm high and made using thin aluminium bent rather like full-size wrought iron, and glued with superglue. Frames are in…Continue

Eyebrow paddles

I wonder if I can tap the collected SMA brains on the subject of eyebrow paddles, which I am not doing too successfully just now.I have used T shaped paddles with a little bit of epoxy putty on the…Continue

Using cushion foam with silicone

Started this discussion. Last reply by Simon Tytherleigh Oct 1, 2018. 8 Replies

I meant to do this some time ago, but here is the result of my little experiment. The problem: silicone can be very heavy and bounces back into position when it is quite thick. There is a silicone…Continue

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Aj Shenefelt's discussion How to best order production schedule/process?
"I find that there is another process that takes more time than I expect it to, which is the actual planning of the shot. Some of mine are simple enough to dive straight in, but often K need to spend at least a day getting everything ready - pop…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Steven Quinones Colon's discussion Mechanical heads
"That looks like a pretty good process, although you need to be sure the shell is spacious enough for what you are putting inside. Also, use retarder and deadener when pouring the silicone so it has time to flow down to the bottom of the mould, or…"

The Legend of Jan Tregeagle movie poster

Here's a movie poster for my film - still a long way off completion - designed for an exhibition we are doing this coming weekend. If you happen to be in the south west of the UK, do come and see us at the Cornwall Regimental Museum in Bodmin on Saturday 6th July from 10 til 4. It would be great to see some stop motion nuts there!BTW 'dreckly' is Cornish for 'manana'....See More

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Count Croc's discussion Mass producing heads
"The best silicone is platinum based and is not cheap. It is not compatible with tin based silicone, and reacts badly to sulphur and latex, so cannot be used in the same mould.  But it is good stuff. I use Platsil Gel 00, but there's…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Count Croc's discussion Mass producing heads
"Bear in mind the Genetral principle of using a hard mould to cast something soft, and vice versa. If by mass production you really mean lots, then a plastic resin cast will be more durable than dental stone, and of course more expensive and less…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Count Croc's discussion Mass producing heads
"No, you need to use dental stone, also called Ultracal or Crystal R in the UK. This is a very hard type of plaster and is ideal for making these moulds. Plaster of Paris is completely unsuitable. I also sometimes forget to put in a pry space, so…"

Simon Tytherleigh replied to Count Croc's discussion Costuming
"For gluing fabric seams there is a product called Fabritak that works very well. It is acetone-based and benefits from occasionally being thinned. I bought a tiny bottle with a thin metal nozzle that is ideal for puppet work, and a big bottle for…"

"Hi. Have a look at the thread I posted called EVA foam helmets. I made some miniature helmets using 2mm EVA foam, effectively a scaled down version of the cosplay stuff. It works well, and can be glued together with contact adhesive. Coat with PVA…"

"Not sure what your problem is. The arms and legs are splayed out, so you can make a two part plaster mould in a straightforward way. "

"One possibility might be to use the Arcmoco motion control within Dragonframe. This can control up to 8 stepper motors, using an Arduino mega 2560, and of course they don't have to be used just for camera control. Roos Mattaar and I have…"
