First Armature

Working on my first armature. About 8 inches tall. Using M2x10mm screws with locknuts to hold ball and socket joints together. I then use J-B Weld around lock nuts to keep them from turning and also on leg and elbow joints to only have one bendable joint. These things are a lot of work! I still need to figure out the feet tie-downs and add hands and then will be starting to work on a head. Wish me luck!…See More

"Silicone is quite heavy so using it just for exposed flesh is quite a good idea. There are some other threads on this site with lots of tips for painting silicone. It's not so much that it is tricky, more that you have to mix it up yourself.…"

Clothing or Silicone?

So, I'm building my first serious armature.Ball and socket.I really want this to look right when it's done. (don't we all?)Anyway, at first, I thought I would do the entire puppet from a silicone cast over the armature.  The character will be about 9 inches tall, kinda cartoon like appearance. But I'm fearful of doing the entire body in silicone, because I want to be able to paint it and make it look good...pants, shirts, skin, all that. "Maybe a clay instead? Like milliput epoxy putty perhaps. Not sure exactly what you are trying to do.  It self hardens, dries hard as a rock. Not sure that would work, might be too heavy for what you want, not sure. I wouldn't screw into it…"
