Hi, guys.  I've been prowling around the forum for over a decade, but I rarely post any of the stuff I'm working on.  I think I generally keep things a little too close to the chest, so I'd like to…Continue

US Sources for 1018 Flat Bars?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Ethan Bartholomae Dec 2, 2017. 6 Replies

Hi, everyone! For my last B&S armature, I used brass, which worked fine, but I'd like to try working with steel on the next one.I'd really like to start making smaller joints, generally, but I'm…Continue

Narrow Joints

Started this discussion. Last reply by philthethrillkill Nov 18, 2013. 8 Replies

Does anyone use/know of a method to make very small joints for a ball and socket armature?  I'm talking about knee joints in particular, so they can actually be hinge joints if that makes it any…Continue

"Thank you again, Adam!  In terms of actual finished projects, I have very little tucked away, and even less that I would ever show to anyone.  I don't know that I could do very good analysis of my own sense of humor, but I'm glad…"

"Adam L, I have a fairly mediocre drill press that I use for all of my drilling.  Then I just hand shape everything else.  Everything is indeed brass aside from the balls, which are surgical steel.  They come pre-tapped, but I drill…"

"Great work! I watched BAR too.  I imagine you have a lot more work tucked away. I'd be interested to learn how you came to be interested in this type of dark humor. The tone in both are spot on. "

"Looks great! The size of the hands and overall posture give it a lot of character already. What are you using instead of a milling machine? What materials are those? Looks like brass for everything, except the balls...?  How did you attach…"

Recent B&S Armature

I made this armature a few weeks ago.  This is my second attempt at a fully-articulated ball and socket.  I really wanted to make a hand armature as well, but I don't think this one has an adequate range of motion.I'm limited in what I can do without a milling machine, but I'd certainly like to start making more…See More

Hi, guys.  I've been prowling around the forum for over a decade, but I rarely post any of the stuff I'm working on.  I think I generally keep things a little too close to the chest, so I'd like to be more open about the things I make. This is a short that I made last year as I was packing to move across the country. It's not really suitable for children, I guess. The animation wasn't really a priority (and neither was the fabrication, in some sense), but the timing and the tone and the "screen…See More

"McMaster Carr (mcmaster.com) is a fantastic source for materials and tools of various kinds. They can be a little pricey at times, but their selection of plastic and metal is pretty extensive. I get all of my 1018 and O1 steel as well as brass and…"

"Thanks, guys.  I ended purchasing the 1/4 x 1/8 bar that I found, but if it proves to be too large, I probably will just stick with brass."

"Hey Simon, in the model shown I used plastic from a broken router cover. the joint is very good but it bends over time, and I had to use a nut with 3 mm screw. I'm working now on fiberglass sheet ~2 mm thick , I think it will be more stable and…"

"I usually go to Bunnings (the Home Depo counterpart here in AU) and they have a range of square and flat steel bars in small lengths(1m). For the B&S i use 6x6 mm square bar, cut to fit the size i want and filed to the desired shape. I use also…"
