I got ahold of some Platsil Gel 10 and cast this head I sculpted. It resembles one of my friends, lol. I made a 2 piece plaster mold . It has beads for eyes,It needs further tinting.
I have to cast 2 more as this is going to be a 3-Headed Giant puppet..

Looks great, the jaw has a great range of movement. Three headed, wow, that's going to be cool!

Thanks, I'm still learning how to use silicone.  I followed Stopmo Nick's tutorial and it turned out pretty good on the first attempt. I'm not sure but I think this will be the first stopmotion 3 headed giant. I think there was something in the movie Troll Hunter but you barely see it and it didn't do much.I think it was CGI anyway.I will continue to post the process.

Nice work! Silicone's high price has put me off slightly, but I'd like to try silicone sometime.

Wow that is great! Particularly the mouth range of motion, like Wallace said. If you built a wire looping through each lip then you might even be able to make specific phonemes too. That's what I'm talking about... Nice and easy but expressive.

The next one I did I put in a wire for the brow. Now it is able to frown. But the bottom mouth wire was a little off so now it opens a little side ways. lol.

Haha, that's cool! Wish I could wire my puppets' expressions like that. Clay doesn't like wire, which acts like a knife to it. But I have always wanted to make a mouth armature for a clay puppet which I can flex and not rely so much on the flexible nature of the material on top of the armature.

Well hey, if he's a three-headed monster maybe an off-kilter mouth is appropriate

If this is platsil gel 10, you can probably use super thin wire in the lip and it would still hold it in place. I'm just thinking out loud here, but I wonder if you could use a flat paddle for the bottom of the jaw to keep the skeletal structure of it accurate, maybe by a smallish wire epoxied to the neck wire, but maybe have super thin wires going up from the paddle into the lip... I wonder if that would work. Maybe a little complicated, but that could be a pretty functional design if it works. I might have to try that the next time I make a silicone head...

You know ,I was thinking about using thin wire for the eye lids,I'll have to experiment.

Comment by Duane Petrie on August 21, 2012 at 11:58am

Now THAT would be interesting. I've never tried it with eyelids.

Eyelid wires! I have never even thought of that...Let me know how it works!
