Hi all,

I just received notice that the cost to run this website on the Ning platform will more than double next year from $239.90 to $588/year. There is no way I am going to pay that. This site is paid up until July 2017. After that, I may decide to do something completely different with this web address, however, I am open to your creative ideas. Not interested in donations to keep the site open. I don't want to reward Ning's price hike decision.

Things on the internet have changed a lot since 1999 when this site first opened. Now there are seemingly dozens of stop motion groups on Facebook. Do a search, it's kind of amazing. This site is pretty quiet and may be losing its relevance. Might be time for something completely different.

If you want to read all about the price change drama, go here.

thanks,

Anthony

Ning has been sold to another company, Cyndx LLC. What it means, I don't know yet, maybe things will improve. Here is the announcement.

I just read  all 11 pages of comments. Cyndx looks to be an investment company, not a social networking tech company. Ning owners Mode Media, just up and shut down their entire operation, except for transferring Ning to Cyndx. Doesn't make me feel good about the future of the Ning platform. Cyndx's LinkedIn page sounds like gobbledeegook nonsense for investment bankers and data miners.

If this site can be backed up right now, I'd go for it quickly. Maybe set up a contingency blog or something that can be link to here that we can bookmark, in case the host site up and vanishes overnight. At least we could keep up to date with an announcement about where SMA sets up next?

Sorry, I'm paranoid, I admit it, LOL. ;)

I saw that freeforum has already been suggested. Have you looked into other free or cheap hosted forum options? They might be less robust than what you're using now, but they might be better than moving to Facebook.

I backed up the entire site last weekend and will continue to do so until a new host is found.

If they did vanish, I could point the domain name to a new web server in order to keep everyone updated so no worries.

I haven't looked into anything seriously yet. I have a few offers for hosting or developing a new site.

Here is what is important to me: finding a site that can be maintained by any number of tech people in case something goes down. The first version of this site was heavily dependent on one person to fix it. I really want to avoid that again. Also, something simple, basic Message Board is the most important. It gets tricky when the site gets too big…it's over its 10GB limit right now so I am looking at deleting the Photo tab. I've backed it up and asked everyone to grab/backup/delete their photos.

Just a follow up. I am starting to delete the oldest photos first in order to get the site down to its limit of 10GB to avoid extra charges. You can help out by deleting any old photos you've posted in the PHOTOS section. The photos have been backed up. I will probably delete the PHOTO section eventually but pics can still be posted on the Message Board. Those are not being deleted.

I am still looking into options on where to move the site but there is still time before that happens.

Thanks.

Note: here is how to delete your old photos.

Apparently Ning decided to hold off on the price increases. Here is the announcement. It is good news for now. It may work out to stay here on Ning for awhile as long as everything is working properly.

Very good to hear that

That's great Anthony, less to worry about for now!

I've taken the poll down, it served its purpose. We'll see what happens with Ning, but I imagine at some point this site will need to move. Stay tuned.
