I was wondering if anyone's experimented with VHS degradation as a post production effect in their stop motion work. I know a lot of musicians, especially in the ambient world will use tape to add a sort of lo-fi character to their work. I am interested in making a film with slower/longer landscape shots, and I've realized that in live action film their is a lot subtle movements in nature that give these shots life. Perhaps the unstableness of vhs would be a way to compensate for this? Are there other similiar ways to affect video?

Adding a film grain in post could also do something without actually affecting your sharpness or colours. Though I do like the vhs effect a lot! Would you actually do it for real with a tape recorder or try to imitatie it?
Adding a practical (animated) light effect on set could also be an idea maybe, like clouds or a changing sun.

If you are just aiming to add a little movement so the landscape doesn't look 'dead', how about adding some drawn birds flying across, or some dancing flies? Moving clouds would be good too. It doesn't need to be much. Or perhaps you are looking to create something otherworldly with the lo-fi background look.

Thanks for the replies. The intended film will take place on the moon! So otherworldly is probably where my head is at. The film will also be in black N white, so clarity of colour isn't much a concer, though I do find the colour bleeding fascinating aswell.  At anyrate I should have mentioned these things in the OP. I will update this thread after I make some test, I do intend to use a tape recorder... We'll see how this goes. Again thnx for the replies.
