Any tips on doing one of those shots where the puppets move in real time and the animator flickers around? I have never tried one before, and they are so great to watch.
I assume it is done as a timelapse with the second camera. What sort of interval do you set? And presumably you have to go through the frames to root out the extra ones when you spent 10 minutes fiddling instead of the usual 5? It seems like there is a lot to do to clean up shots like this. So any crafty hints and tips gratefully received!

Trying to remember, might have been every 2 minutes. So I think there is more than one exposure per frame. A long exposure so moving people are blurred, kind of ghostly, but the puppet stays solid looks best. I think to get those smooth looking ones where the puppet animation is perfect, it would be best if it was not an automatic timelapse, but someone takes the shot so you always get the puppet having just moved, or about to move, not mixing the two. Or like you say, editing some out when you get stuck on a frame for longer. Did it once, brought my own camera to do time-lapse while animating with Isabel in her studio, on her film Butterflies. Its on the home page here. http://butterfliesanimation.com
Boxtrolls had some great ones at the end.
Yes, the Boxtrolls was brilliant - the 'unseen hand' and all that existential musing. Wonderful!
I had thought of somehow triggering the second camera when the main one takes a frame, but that would be pointless as I am always just standing by the computer at that moment. More than one exposure per frame ofthe actual shot seems necessary as you say to capture the animator moving.
Will just have to give it a go and see what the result comes out as. Thanks!
