Hi all,

Extremely new to all of this, and I am sorry if this has already been addressed recently. I have decided to make my own puppets, I was using toys just for fun but there were a lot limits and I have an idea that will require some original puppets. I started building my puppets and I want to build sets as well, like a cabin with hardwood floors. So watching some videos on how to animate and on puppet builds I obviously saw many things on tie downs. But how does that work with set pieces? I can't drill a ton of holes in my floor because that would be noticeable in my videos. Like I said I just started and I have a million other questions but I figured this may be a good place to start with said questions.

Quite often, you won't see the floor where the character is standing, just the floor further back. So you may not need to hide the holes as often as you expect. I have floorboards in my set, made of strips of ply, and I haven't had to fill any holes yet, after 8 shots and more than a minute of animation. If I do see holes in the camera view I will fill them with brown plasticine, painted over if necessary. I can poke the plasticine out with the tiedown just as the puppet foot covers the hole, and fill it again before the foot reveals it. And the post- production solution of patching over with a cloned bit of the wood texture in Photoshop, which I think Strider covers, is there as a backup.

yep, what nick said. another thing to keep in mind is that you'll wind up having to ask this question for every single setup/ shot that you do. so rather than trying to prepare the set for every possibility up front, rehearse the shot (one shot) figure out where you'll need to tie the puppet down, and plan for those 3 or 4 holes. then patch and start over for the next shot.

Yes, that's what I usually do, just drill the holes I need for the shot. One exception was a pub floor painted with a strong pattern like a carpet. The holes were in the dark spots, all over the floor, and became part of the pattern so you didn't see them.

Thanks for your replies, I appreciate the knowledge. I did just assume that filling the holes would be a hassle, I guess there is that old saying about assuming. Thanks again!
