I find myself in mourning and the death came unexpectedly. I may have been the last person to post a topic on the old SMA message board... I just clicked on that little icon that's been in my bookmarks bar for years and I got a message that said 'page not found'.

I know that this site replaces the old one and it serves the same purpose with more abilities but... that old SMA was my old neighborhood that I just saw burn to the ground and I'm a bit upset at the moment. This is a death, past which I won't be able to 'move on' quite so quickly.

I feel your pain. ... The new site is fine but ... Jbd

The archive of the old Message Board is underway.  I will let everyone know when it is available.

Same here - that was my home on the internet that just got bulldozed.

I guess I will adjust to this new board in time.  But I would have liked to see the old board remain up until the archive is ready and accessible to all.

weird- i still seem to be able to get there??

john

So old site gone. It has many years of online presence & search indexed under that URL. This site address (url) is different ... http://stopmotionanimation.ning.com ... there is no 'www' prefix and 'ning' added near end. To maintain all those years of online cache presence, it would be best to keep original website address.

Today I am downloading the SMA boards database from the old site, and uploading it to it's new location on my servers. Hopefully, over the next few days, I will be able to make it accessible again as a resource. The plan is to make it impossible to login there or post anything new, but still be fully searchable and readable. Will keep you guys up to date. :)

It's best that people cannot access the old site during the archiving process, so that no new posts are made there, that might get missed out in the final archive.

A long time ago, I burned a thread from the old SMA onto a DVD. It's the thread that's about my film and I had no idea at the time how long websites and/or threads live, so as a precaution I figured out how to make a copy of it. (MAJOR accomplishment for someone who's still largely computer illiterate.

I did that because I knew that it was sometimes difficult to find a specific thread after it got old and I wasn't sure if they didn't just *Poof!* out of existence after a certain amount of time. I met people for the first time on that thread - people I've since come to know as real friends so the idea of losing it really bugged me.

A while after I burned it onto DVD, I realized that I really didn't need to because threads never really vanish, they just get old... but I never threw that DVD away, just because of a nagging feeling that one day I would come to regret it if I did. Sure enough that day has come, I'm so glad I never trashed that disk.

Not to worry, Ron... I now have every thread ever written at SMA backed up on my own hard-disk. So it's all quite safe. :)

I am now downloading all of the code that drives the functionality of the old site. This also includes all of the photographs people uploaded to the server over the years. So, it's all looking good so far.

Thanks for the update Paul and good luck with the operation...feels like surgery.

My pleasure... It's quite amazing to see the sheer breadth of data the SMA site generated over the years... For example, there are approx 15,000 user-posted photographs and images that were uploaded to the website. Incredible really.
