I just wanted to share this video which is now online without international viewing restrictions.
This animated ad break was launched on ITV in the UK some time before christmas as part of a charity program. The puppets were made at Mackinnon and Saunders in Manchester and the animation filmed in ITV's studio in London. I had the chance to be involved with the puppets while I spent some time as a trainee at the armature department of Mackinnon and Saunders wonderful workshop. This was a very fast turn around project as there were about 38 puppets that had to be made within 2-3 weeks. So it was quite a chance from the complex and intricate ball and socket armatures. I mostly made a lot of foot plates, eyes and other bits for the wire armatures. The team knitting the costumes must have worked around the clock and the animators had I think 2 weeks to animate it all. I think it has turned out beautiful and should be seen by more people. :)
Just some fabulous work here. really well done and the effort must have been astronomical. Thanks so much for the share.
Here it is. What you do to put videos here is:
On the Vimeo or Youtube page, click on Share, then select the Embed Code and Copy. Back here on SMA, at the top of the white box where you type your post there is a row of buttons. First one is Link, second one is for posting photos, third one is for video. It looks like a piece of film. Click on it, and paste the Embed Code in the box and click OK.
Very nice, all of it! I love the dog at the beginning. Knitted wool has the ability to stretch, which makes it really good as a skin for a stop motion puppet. And after seeing maybe too many silicone puppets that are trying to look like real flesh, I am appreciating these kind of materials that have their own character, more and more.
Hurray! Thanks Nick, I've edited it in the first message.
Glad you both enjoyed it too. Yeah I like the texture, and some boil while to the right extend that gives it charm while not distracting.
Here's are two articleswith some behinf the scenes pictures and info:
this is beautiful!!!
It's so well done, and beautifully animated. There is so much attention to detail, thank you very much for sharing!
Wow, those are amazing! Did they base these on existing commercials, or were these re-shot in live action? I ask because I've recently seen the one with the horses and the pony on television, but it's not the animated version.
And most of the Sets where built in my shed by me and Andy . It was a tight scheduled but fun . Whiskey helped
They do look lovely shame they weren't on more . Think one or two were repeated by the original clients
