I made this armature a few weeks ago. This is my second attempt at a fully-articulated ball and socket. I really wanted to make a hand armature as well, but I don't think this one has an adequate range of motion.
I'm limited in what I can do without a milling machine, but I'd certainly like to start making more complicated joints.
I don't know that I'll actually use this one for a puppet, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to share it anyway.
Looks great! The size of the hands and overall posture give it a lot of character already.
What are you using instead of a milling machine?
What materials are those? Looks like brass for everything, except the balls...?
How did you attach the balls and rods?
I'd love to see a short test, or at least some pictures of your first attempt at ball-and-socket. Good work!

Adam L, I have a fairly mediocre drill press that I use for all of my drilling. Then I just hand shape everything else. Everything is indeed brass aside from the balls, which are surgical steel. They come pre-tapped, but I drill the holes wider and then solder them to the rods using stainless steel flux.
Adam T, the jaw is posable, yes. It's hinged on both sides, and a swivel joint connects it to the head.

Wondering how this armature is holding up. Have you been using it?
I am also just noticing the double balls at the knees, hips, elbows and wrists—is there a reason you included those?
How tall is the armature overall?
And lastly, if you have the time, how did you make the hinge joints for the fingers?

I've not animated extensively with the armature, but it's holding up well. The brass rod that I used for the barbells has far too much flex for this application, but in general it's holding up very well. The operation remains smooth.
The reason you might include the second ball is to counteract the flex of the sandwich plate and guarantee a smoother operation. Because it is the same size as the ball in the barbell, it shares the force of the tightened screw.
Overall the armature is about 12".
The hinge joints are just sandwich plates held together by screws. It works ok. I kind of cheated some of the thicknesses, and that's a clear weak point. I would also not recommend this thumb construction, because it has fairly limited range of motion.
And James, it's never the wrong time to experiment with armatures!
