Hi Molly,
Happen to see your question about milling machines and lathes here, might be good to move this to the armature or machining threads, but for now... Well I cannot really give very specific advice on those really as I still haven't used one yet, but would like to in the future.
I built a ball and socket armature from scratch using the tools in the metal workshop at my university while I was studying animation. I did not use a lathe or milling machine but just a pillar drill, hand tools and brazing torch for silver soldering. A milling machine and lathe would surely be nice tools to learn to use in the future and make more accurate joints and make it easier and faster to repeat actions, etc, but it can also be done without.

You can see my armature in action in my film 'Moonbird': https://vimeo.com/96693049

Hey Strider! Thank you so much for pointing me to Sven's blog- This is going to be amazingly helpful!

You ought to start a thread asking specifically about milling machines and armature machining - not many people will see it in the introductions thread.

There was a guy named Sven who used to post here and had a blog where he detailed his adventures in outfitting his home machine shop specifically for armature machining, and his progress along the way. I know he took a good hard look at Sherlines, and if I remember right that's what he ended up getting, but don't quote me on that. He's very meticulous when it comes to making detailed blog entries, which makes his posts very valuable to others following the same course. Here's a search page for Machining (you might want to also search for terms like Armature or Milling Machine etc): http://www.puddingbowl.org/MT/mt-search.cgi?IncludeBlogs=13&sea...

Nope - looks like he ended up getting a Microlux I think. To make sure you find all his armature entries you might want to just check all entries under his Stopmo tag: http://www.scarletstarstudios.com/blog/archives/movies/stopmo/

HOLY COW!!!! You made those armatures without a mill and lathe!! That is crazy impressive!

Thanks :)
I made a blog during the building process, although I stopped updating it somewhere when I finally got the wing design right, and there's a lot of ramble about bird anatomy, but if it can be useful in any way: http://stopmotionjourney.blogspot.co.uk/
(somewhere I intended to keep it up as a blog in general but so far those intentions have not really been put into practice...)
Looking forward to see more of your armature making adventures. :)

I just read a little of your blog and am excited to dig through it more! Thanks so much for your help!

Hello Everybody,

My name is Chris Neuhahn. I'm new to stop motion but not to animation. I've been working in CG TV animation (Nickelodeon and DreamWorks Animation TV) for 8+ years. In my personal work lately  I've been chasing a more stop motion style and thought Why not just do stop motion. That plus being tired of staring at a computer for 18 hours a day made me decide to re-imagine shorts I did in 1999 and 2004 as stop motion with a very hand-made feel.

I'm looking forward to digging around the forum and seeing what everyone is up to. :)

Hiya!

I've been lurking on this site for far too long, time to step out of the shadows and introduce myself! I'm Rachel, I'm a student in the UK studying a 'Performance Design' course. My real love is animation though, especially stop motion. I realised this a bit too late in terms of degree choices, but it hasn't stopped me from pursuing my ambition to work in the industry. I recently finished a placement as a costume maker on the film 'Chuck Steel, Night of the Trampires' - if you haven't heard about it then you should check it out here!:

I'm about to go into my third year where we have the creative freedom to make just about anything for our exhibition. I'm in the process of designing and making puppets based on the Hayao Miyazaki film 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind', which is a favourite of mine. I hope to make a short animation with them too, time-permitting. Please feel free to check out my progress on this over on Instagram:

I recently started blogging about it too, hoping to update here a few times a week:

I love coming to this forum for inspiration and advice. It's a pleasure to meet you all!

Dave from Syracuse NY. I enjoy motorcycling, camping and now, learning how to do stop motion. I find it fascinating and can't wait to get better.
