Hey Guys!

I know its been a long time....but I always remember taking my first stopmo steps here.

I thought I would share one of my test unit shots from KUBO with you guys.

When you first join a film they usually throw you in a test unit for 3 weeks to let you feel the puppets out and get in character with who ever you will be animating.

This is one of my very first tests with the Monkey character from KUBO.

The movements are so smooth and fluid. Are you free to pick the actions/motions/movements or are the spelled out for you at the beginning?

I wish they would have included more bits like this in the extras on the dvd/bluray release.

Hey Dennis!

no....they just gave me the puppet and said....start playing. My job as an animator is to try and find the limitations of the puppet before I get her out on set. Posing - armature limitations? rigging needs.....

This animation was clear improvisation.... started at the beginning and just kept chugging forward. I knew I wanted to test slices and how far I could push some poses.

FUN

Monkey can kick some butt!  You've really got the weight and strength in there.  Thanks for sharing Justin.

Very impressive! I watched it a few times and paused it at key points to see what I can learn. Beautiful moves. Thankyou for sharing. :)

Cheers,
Damien

Thanks guys! and yes.....with my new project just beginning....I am definitely retunring to the blogosphere.

Flawless animation! Really great stuff there

Can't wait to see what you do next.

Wow, a new project?  Another film of your own?  :)

Thought I'd commented on this Monkey test already, must have been at FB - beautiful animation, strong poses with snappy transitions and perfectly timed holds.
