I'm trying to find this really old stop-motion film that was meant to be for kids.

But it was apparently too scary for them to watch.

I believe the main villain was a witch who ended up being killed, but then came back as a shoe or boot to haunt someone.

Any ideas?

That's not ringing any bells at all. Was it a feature length film, a short? Funny, serious? Entirely stopmotion, or with live action included? American, European, Asian, etc? Any idea what time period it was made in? 20s, 50s, 80s? "Really old" can mean very different things to different people.

I honestly have no Idea.  It looked as though it might have been made around the 50s.

Either American to European.

The only thing I remember is that the ending had a haunted boot...

Interesting...

I've never heard of anything quite like this. Have you tried a search online?

On the same note of mysterious stop motion films with little reference, there was this one black and white short I saw way back as a kid and it totally scared the heck out of me! It had like this creepy boy puppet that was carrying around a sinister box, kinda looked like it was by the Quay Brothers or the guy who did the TOOL videos, but I haven't found anything that matches my memory.

Don't recognise the film.  So, Strider's questions, again:  Was it a short film?  There are a lot of those.    If it was a stopmotion puppet feature film, there aren't so many of those, and we could probably track it down.    If it was a live action feature with some stopmo creature animation, Neil Pettigrew's Stop Motion Filmography would probably cover it.

Any memory of the style of the puppets and sets?  Did it look like Rankin-Bass (Mad Monster Party, Xmas specials) or like George Pal's Puppetoons?   Was it in Black and White or colour?

Cadmus - The "creepy boy puppet with the box" film doesn't ring a bell either.

Ok, wait a minute - I might have seen the film you're talking about. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it was an eastern European feature film about a schoolboy whose toys would come alive through stopmotion. The settings and people were done live action, only the toys were stopmo. One of the toys - I think it was a fairy doll, would fly around and talk to him. I'm not sure there was a witch who died, but it does seem like there was a shoe that maybe had once been a person or something like that. Now if only I could remember who did it or what it was called!! It was somebody like Karel Zeman, though I don't think it was actually him. Despite being European, it had the feel of an after-school special type of film that would be shown in the US. If we're relying on my memory alone, we're in trouble - though it might surface mysteriously. But I'm hoping somebody else might remember what I'm talking about. I believe it was made in the late 60's or early 70's, possibly even early 80's but looking older than that? and I don't remember if it was black and white or color, but it seems like it was black and white.

I remember the fairy doll (or whatever it was) flying around and talking to him in his room, outside in a field, and even in his school I believe. I think he kept her hidden and carried her around.

I remember being scared witless as a child by black-and-white films which were definitely European, as they were subtitled. I'm thinking they were all trolls under bridges and that sort of scary fairytale stuff. Nothing beyond a memory of childhood trauma, though!

Is this it by any chance?

The flying sneaker- TRAILER from Horizon International on Vimeo.

The Flying Sneaker, screenplay and animation by Bretislav Pojar (That's it! Not Zeman, but closely allied in my mind). Actually made in 1990, but looks more like a 60's or 70's film to me. There are several trailers and clips online, and so far they all seem to have terrible sound tracks substituted over the original. If you do a search you can see a few more.

Though this wouldn't qualify as too scary for kids - more like too tame for today's kids!

Great find Strider, but like you say, doesn't look at all scary.  We still need more info from TF, particularly, is a short or a feature, and is all stop motion or with live actors as well?

Well, I can see where he might not know those things. Sometimes all I can remember of an old movie is just a fragment with no context. But if he can't remember any more and if it's not The Flying Sneaker, then I'm fresh out of ideas.
