Hi Martin, You might want to try out some of the free programmes that are available. I've been using Helium Frog for about a year and certainly havn't outgrown it yet, for a camera I use a Logitech pro 9000 webcam although I hear the microsoft lifecam is pretty good and possibly a bit cheaper.

Have fun.....Keith.

Are you talking about frame grabbing software, or editing, or...?

As Keith said, Helium Frog is probably a good bet for frame grabbing. I used to use Frame Thief, but they've stopped supporting it. You might still be able to find a copy online, however.

I assume your computer is a PC? Not really sure what the PC equivalent of Apple's Quicktime is, but that would be your best bet for a simple program to compile your still frames into video clips.

Not much help, huh?

PC equivalent is usually WMV, or in some cases AVI files...on stop motion pro at least , WMV gives you more compression settings and options....

30 frames/ second is overkill. Disney animation was shot at 24fps. If you're in the UK you'd probably want to shoot at 25 fps to match the PAL video format.

Unless you're really going for ultra smoothness (which isn't always the goal), you could probably get away with 12 or 15 fps.

Are you making a flat cartoon or using dimensional animation?

Hi Martin,

I think that everyone so far has been under the impression that you were looking to learn about Stop Motion Animation and all that it involves.  Would that be the case ?  I ask just to clarify things, because your latest post here regarding your  'Question number ONE !' - "What is the best software for a newbie?", would suggest that you want to start Cell Frame Animation and not Stop Motion Animation.

These two types of animation are very different and these forums were set up for disscussions on the art and techniques of Stop Motion Animation.

Kind regards,

Fred D

To clarify further, this is the current Wikipedia defininition of Stop Motion Animation :

Stop motion (also known as stop frame) is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Dolls with movable joints or clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. Stop motion animation using clay is called clay animation or "clay mation".

Kind regards

Fred D

Good luck, and have fun!

If you looking for a framegrabber software, here's a free one that will get you started - http://animatordv.com/download_free.php

Jeff

I have a Canon Powershot G5. Does anyone know of a specific frame grabber that will be compatible it?

I don't know much about the G5 Powershot, but if you check the websites for the different frame grabber software, they usually have a list of compatible cameras. Here's a couple links to the ones I'm familiar with.

Stop motion Pro - Camera info

AnimatorDV - Camera info

Cheers Jeff. They're the two that I'm looking at.... just not having any luck yet. I think that it is likely to be an OS issue. Might have to drag out an XP PC and try again as the G5 remote capture drivers don't seem to be supported on Windows 7

Actually, check this out. looks like Dragon will work with a G5 http://www.dragonframe.com/camera.php

I think Dragon started out as Mac only (I might be wrong) but your post just made me think of them.

Jeff
