Hey guys!  So I'm almost finished my puppet project for this semester and I made 2 build up puppets using liquid latex.  (Monster Makers RD-407)

What can I do to prolong their life?  I'm guessing that the latex will deteriorate and dry out and probably crack over time, is there any kind of product that you can get that acts as a preservative?

Also, thanks for all the previous info you guys provided, it was super helpful!

Hey Kris,

These look pretty good. Did you cast the latex hands or were they layered with a brush? Also did you use wire armatures, or ball and sockets?

Cheers!

Alan

I'm not too sure about preservatives, but I have still got characters I created with liquid latex from 5 years ago. They still seem to be in perfect condition, a little dusty perhaps but still good! I think sunlight and UV rays have a deteriorating effect on latex so ensure they are out of direct sunlight or UV lamps. Latex can tear if stressed too heavily but it usually takes a while and repetitive stretching in the same place to have a bad effect. If it does tear or split, simply touch back up with liquid latex and your ready to go. Here is a link to chemical inhibitors of latex and those which will have adverse effects,

there is a lot of info here so maybe just look for any chemicals you may be using with your latex and check their compatibility. I have to say it made me laugh when checking through the list to find that chocolate syrup has a very bad adverse effect.... wonder who found that out!

Hmm, okay, thanks, I'm actually glad to hear that.  I only used latex on the heads and the lower parts of the limbs (Forearms and hands, lower legs and feet for the old lady puppet because she's wearing a  dress) so the only latex parts that are being moved and bent frequently are the fingers

They're both wire armatures.  The hands weren't cast, I made a wire and polymer clay hand and dipped them in latex a couple of times to build them up
