What did you end up doing?
(sorry I know this is an old thread, but I really am interested)
Denting is easily overdone. I also use a bit of temporary sticky like wax to give it enough hold.
I usually dent it just a little. I've use a piece of thread strung over the small piece to give it more tension and a better hold.
I'm sorry but I don't understand

I split the female into 4 at the end (about a cm cut with a jewelry saw on each corner) and bend it slightly out. Then do the same with the male (but only the very top) and bend out each side 45 degrees to make it easier to insert the female. Holds in with tension but not a lock.
Please excuse my pedantry but I'm hoping for advice re: square tubing width. I'm looking at making a wire armature with 2mm thick armature wire threaded through square tubing for stiff limbs, and so that I can make removable hands and head (perhaps limbs also). (I've been playing around with round aluminium tubing, loving that it's soft and easy to work with but of course the rotation swings around all over the place and square tubes would lock into each other and hold position much more). Is 2mm thick wire likely to fit through 2.38mm square tube or should I go 3.18mm? It's hard to tell on the Hobby Tools Australia site.
i would also welcome thoughts on aluminium vs brass. I can cut the aluminium so easily it's very convenient, will it hold up to the task in an armature? Plan is sculpey baked form over the rods and then plasticine for flesh, should be interesting!
Answering my own questions by looking at what I've already got so far, a little over 2mm round tube (let's assume 2.38mm) fits the armatures wire so I'll guess the square one will. Aluminium round tube is a bit too soft, the brass one I have definitely more fit to task.
