Hello guys,

Has anyone made a couch before? I want to make a couch and I just want to ask is it possible to make a rig hole somewhere in the couch? Because the character will be sitting and I am afraid it moves while in between (before he gets up from sitting or before the first contact of the character's body and the couch).

Any ideas?

I appreciate your help

What materials are you thinking of creating the couch from? I'm sure it would be possible to have a rigging point under the seat, this would mean you would have to cut a tiny slit in the couch cushion to allow you to fasten the puppet to the couch. An alternative would be to have a rare earth magnet under the seat if your puppet has a metal hip joint. If you mean you don't want the couch itself to move during the sitting phase, then this should be secured in whatever way you are currently fastening your props to your set. Usually a hot glue gun as the glue can easily be removed with lighter fluid or IPA alcohol.

Hi will mundell,

The couch is going to be made out of wood and foam, then covered by cloth. Basically, like a real couch, but I am worried about the character! The hip is made out of epoxy.

Thank you.

Well I would have access through the bottom of the couch cushion where the puppet will sit. Then you can use a piece of threaded rod that screws into your puppets hip to keep it still. Do you have any method of tie downs on your puppets armature? If not then it makes holding the puppet still difficult unless you just use the tie downs in the feet or use a rig which you would have to edit out later. If you have any pictures of the puppet then it may be easier to work out what you need.

You could build the couch like a box, then drill a hole in the set floor underneath it and another one in the top of the couch, and run a long screw or length of allthread up through them both.

If you already made the puppet and didn't include a tie-down for this, then you could maybe just have a piece of armature wire coming up through the hole in the couch, wrap it around his waist, and cover it with his shirt?

Sometimes, it is enough to have the feet tied down to the floor.  I do this with simple wooden chairs where there is nowhere to hide a tiedown in the seat.   But at least one foot has to stay flat on the floor.  With a couch you can fit a bolt underneath.  A slit cut in the fabric of the seat cushion would let the bolt poke through, and almost close up when it is not there.  So if you have a threaded hole in the hip block, that is the best way to go.  Like Strider said, a wire around his waist is the next best option.  Also, you can have a much smaller hole in the fabric to poke a wire through.

My puppet has tie-downs. but the shot is going to be a man comes toward the couch and then throw him self dead tired as if he is falling down at some point his both feet are going to be in the air.

wraping the waist idea is very nice! I am going for it.

Thank you very much guys!
