Hi, I'm starting some stop motion workshops with children and I need huge help with stop motion software.. One of the problems is it must be completely free. I'm from the country where paypal just start working and I have never bought anything from foreign countries and honestly said right now I'm not in situation of buying anything. The other problem is I have mac 10.7.5 which cannot be upgraded. The software I need should be like SAM animation which I have for Windows but not for mac. It should have live view (I would use web camera), option to choose frames per second, and some preview window or timeline so children could see animation right at place. Some software that would be very quick, simple and effective for children. I know most of them must be paid for, especially for mac. I have sony a6000 and I would mount web camera on top of it and used them both. The shots from web camera would be shown to children right away, and shots from sony would be used later in after effects for compositing. Does anybody have idea what can I do about it? Or somebody have some installation which could help, SAM animation or something else? Thanks!

Lionel Orozco has a page at his Stop Motion Works website where he looked at all the different framegrabbers available at the time. It would be out of date by now, but you could follow up some of those links and see which programs are still around, and if they work on OSX 10.7.5. Here it is: http://www.stopmotionworks.com/stopmosoftwr.htm
Framethief used to be a popular free framegrabber for Macs but I don't think it has been updated for a very long time and I don't think it would work.

The only free approach I have used is the Stop Motion Studio app on an iPhone or iPad. That uses the inbuilt camera, and can do HD 1920 x 1080 capture, with all the usual options like onion skinning and clicking back and forth between the live view and last frames taken. If you have those devices, or Android phones or tablets, it is an absolutely free way to get them animating. But if you don't have any smartphones or tablets, that's quite a big purchase. Here is a video where I tested it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCldXEMOCLM

I normally use Stop Motion Pro on a PC or Dragonframe on a Mac and a Canon DSLR, so I don't know much about free options on the Mac. I did all my beginner stuff in the days of 8mm and 16mm film. But with luck, someone here may know what you can get for free that runs on the Mac.

I've checked that page already. None of those softwares work for me, some of them are just for built in camera etc. You're right, Framethief doesn't work either.

I don't have smartphone or tablet.

I have trial Dragonframe but it will expire soon, before the workshops either start. I hope someone else would have some suggestion.

Thanks

Hey, that's cool! It looks like it might work! I just don't like the resolution which is 4:3 and widescreen, it doesn't have option for 16:9 but nevermind, I would mount camera below webcam and capture from both. Hope any other webcam could be used not just built in one..?.. I don't have one to check..

JellyFish would use JellyCam :) Thank you so much for this!!

Hi Jelly Fish. I just had someone turn up at the studio with a trail version of this Aardman software;

http://animateit.kudlian.net/download.php

Well easy to use and free. for Windows & Mac.

Thanks! :) It's good, but it last only 7 days and I need it for longer period. Cheers!

I'd say 7 days is plenty. You only need 1/2 an hour to figure out if it is what you need. Anyway. I am sure there is something out there to be gotten for good and for free if you have the time to do the research -  Best of luck!

I meant it would expire after 7 days and I can't afford to buy it.

Ooops. I see. Any way.  just an option. Grant's suggestion above - Jellycam -seems just as good.
