Hi all,

I'm new here but have been checking out the site over the past couple of weeks and have found it incredibly helpful and interesting.

I'm making a short film with puppets (probably wasn't even worth mentioning that). It's my first time and I have a query - I have a female puppet who is all but finished except for her hair, I've made her using an armature with wadding for a body and Super Sculpey for her head. What I'd like to know is how to choose and attach hair to her head, I was about to just buy some doll hair and glue it on but thought I'd ask you all just in case there was a preferred method. If anyone has any help or advice on the matter I'd greatly appreciate it :)

Thank you,

-Alex

I don't know if I'm qualified to answer, but I use cut up pieces of cotton rope. I glue it on and paint it.

I've heard other people talk about using hair extensions from beauty supply stores, dyed wool and also yarn. I think it just depends what kind of look you're going for.

Thanks for getting back to me Jeff. Appreciate the advice. Looks like I've got some glueing of hair to do.

I use mostly real hair, and dependent on movement I use thin wires and cover with thin hair or just ordinary hairpunching :)

Thanks for the info dude!

If you use something that can be animated you can make your character's hair sway as the consequence of its actions, or to infer wind in your shots. In the past I've used pipe cleaners as a cheap solution, a bit stiff to be honest, but there are 10,000 possibilities.  Just go to "hobbycraft" and have a look around. To attach it I made a removable wig for easy maintenance during shooting. That worked well.           Best of luck.!

Thanks a lot Gustavo! Like the puppet you've posted, really good images. Appreciate the advice - I've actually already gone and got myself some real hair now. Aware that I won't have as much control over it but I think it will work well for my project. Thanks again!
