I am trying to glue together multiple sheets of styrofoam insulation board. Does anyone have a recommendation for what glue to use?

I also need to paint it. Anything you use to seel the styrofoam so it ready for acrylic paint?

After a quick experiment, Bargs is the wrong choice. It melts away the foam like spray paint would.

Hot glue gun (lowest temp). Should work. . .
I've never painted styrofoam but a quick search suggests water based acrylic paints are safe. . also Inks perhaps? maybe someone else has some experience in this.

If it's the white beady stuff, regular white glue for both gluing and sealing.

Years ago at the shop I worked at, we made a very large "undersea" rock formation for a children's museum using 4 inch thick 4' x 8' sheets glued together with regular white glue and then roller painted white glue onto the surface to seal it so we could coat it with fiberglass (to keep the resin from melting the styrofoam). Strong enough that kids could climb on it, even though they weren't supposed to, lol.

Thanks Eric and Dennis!  Just to clarify, by "white glue" are we talking about Elmer's or equivalent?

So far spray adhesive and hot glue are working and since I don't have any white glue on hand I haven't been able to try that yet.

Yes, regular old white glue. The size of the stuff we were doing required us to buy it in gallon sized jugs, lol. Don't forget to add in dry time. I'd brush it on as thin as possible to speed that process up. The thicker it is, the longer the cure time.

Thanks! I just went and bought a gallon. I'll give it a coat soon.

Good luck! :)

Here's the recipe that seems to be working so far. Spray adhesive to stick each layer together. I then put toothpicks in in a crossed pattern to hold each layer together even tighter. I am then painting the whole thing with a coat of Elmer's (white) glue. After that dries I will be applying plaster and then paint.

Awesome! I've just been assuming it's terrain, but how large of a structure are you making?

Roughly two feet by one and a half foot dome shape.  It is a floating island so it all has to hold together well and support itself from an internal rig.

Be generous with the white glue coating layers, and I would add some white glue into the plaster mix. Helps to make it stick and strengthens the plaster.

I have used the polyurethane type glue on Styrofoam, the sort that foams as it sets. Very strong and sandable. Ideally spray a v small bit of water onto one surface to aid curing.
