Hi all,

I've been using a Nikon D5100 with DragonFrame for a couple of years now. I loaded up the program this evening to animate and the camera was not detected. It was working fine yesterday and now all of a sudden it just will not be recognised. It's connected up via a USB to AV cable that came with the camera. The camera itself still works fine when not connected, and when it is connected the LCD screen doesn't turn on, indicating that it's connected as per usual. I've gone through the usual motions of restarting my Mac, resetting the PRAM and the SMC to no avail. I'm really stumped with this one so any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

-Jacob

Check your connections. I had something like this recently and it was down to a USB connection that was just slightly out of square. Use electrical tape or rubber bands to hold them in place.

The USB's definitely in place, I've taken it out and back in again a few times in case that was the problem but it's firmly in.

If you have another cable it's worth trying that. I think you might also need to check the connections dialogs in DF in case something got shut down accidentally. These glitches are a real frustration, you have my sympathy!

Yeah, it always is a pain when everything seems to be going fine and then...not.

Anyway, I bought another cable from Amazon for about £5 and it seems to be working fine now. It's not a Nikon official one since those seem to be extortionately overpriced, but to anyone else who may be having this problem, buying a new cable seemed to fix it.

My approach with things that are small, fragile, and important, like your USB cable that links your primary camera to Dragonframe on a laptop: Have two of them at the beginning of every production. "One is none, two is one," as the saying goes. Memory cards, light bulbs, USB cables, and such things get lost, break, etc. with shocking frequency, and nothing kills the creative spark like your whole production or shoot going on hold until you go out and get a new [insert thing here]. This approach has saved my bacon on live shoots, audio recording sessions, traveling productions, and stop motion alike. Small investment for a lot of insurance.
