Hey everyone, Just wanted to share a project I've been working on for a bit now. I don't have any animation to share yet, but I'm starting to get excited! I've built the ship miniature, and wired it up with practical lighting for interior and exterior lights and the engines.

I've also built most of the set for the "Pod Room" which will have close to 500 individual pods each with it's own plant and embryo (haven't got all those done yet!) I've got a bunch more pics already posted here: Capsule Progress

I'll be back with more...!

Looking good so far!
500 pods, yikes! When there is a lot of repetition like that, I look for ways of making a few and multiplying them. If the camera stays still, it's often possible to set up all the pods in one part of the frame, shoot that, then move them to another part, and combine the shots the computer. I can't do that with a moving camera because I don't have motion control, but by shooting a higher resolution image with my DSLR I can add a pan or zoom after the elements are combined.

Nice! Is it going to remain squeaky clean, or will it get dressed with a little "space dust?"

grecodan: The main character has been living alone on the ship for a long time, so I will be doing some weathering. Plus there was a meteoroid that hit the ship at one point...so that won't have been a simple cleanup.

StopmoNick: As far as the pods, yeah there is a shot where he looks up at all of them (way more than 500 in that shot) and I will be doing some compositing. But for most shots there will never be more than 100-200 visible at a time. I already have all the plastic pod domes, and since there is at least one shot that tracks the character moving up past them, they need to actually be in the frame (aside from the fact that I want this film to be as much in-camera as possible).

We'll see how that goes!

The real thing I've been struggling with is casting the puppet!

I shot a short test animation/teaser the other day.

Also hard at work on framing up some of the other sets:
