I've worked in clay animation for almost 30 years, but for fun and a change of pace I thought I'd try a different medium.  So I spent a couple thousand hours, spread out over a couple years, and wrote, composed, animated and voiced my first attempt at a stop motion silhouette film.  It's called "Blue Jays".

I got a piece of glass and a put a piece of diffusion on the front side, then used removable double-stick scotch tape to adhere black construction paper characters and sets to the glass from behind.

Behind the glass -

Although my hand does have a small role in the film, this is just a behind the scenes pic to show the scale I was working in.  My hand is pressed up against the glass.

This story moves at a pretty good pace.  Some folks have said they couldn't quite keep up with it, and upon watching it a second time were surprised to discover so many things they missed.  Here's the link to the film on my channel if you'd care to see what they're talking about.

Always appreciate any feedback you'd care to offer.  Thanks!

There is so much good stuff going on here! The rhyming, the ridiculous story, the positive ending... good job!

And I didn't even notice the music, which is odd considering I'm a full-time musician. That just goes to show that it was the perfect background to lift up the story!

Thanks Rebecca!  I'm so glad you enjoyed it.  And I LOVE that you called it a "ridiculous story".  That make me so happy and is exactly what I was going for.  Ridiculous.  I think I'll change the YouTube description to include that word.  And I wrote the music after the script so that it would be very specific to the story.  Nice to know that worked as well.  Thanks again!

That's great Randy! Your narration and music carried it right along and let me enjoy the simple, yet well-timed animated.  Nice one.

Thanks Adam!  I checked out Heaver.  All that hair eating made me gag a little - hehe - but it's a cool and fun little film with a great look.

Thanks Randy! I'm glad you liked it.  It was a silly idea that I just had to see through to the end.

Adam, it is SO awesome! I've been watching it like at least once a week since it was released! SO funny - especially the part where the Heaver starts to eat the kid's fake beard and then spits it out and stomps on it!!! LOL! Makes me laugh just thinking about it!

Dude, and seeing that the eyes are 2D animated in post - TOTALLY an inspiration for me. Gonna go that route for my first stop motion music video that's currently in production. Wouldn't even have thought of it if it weren't for seeing your Hair-Hungry Heaver short! thank you!

That's one of my favorite shots as well. Glad you like it so much Rebecca!
