After finishing this film back in 2017, and playing in many film festivals, it's finally time to premiere online. So here it is!

This was my second full short film that I wrote/directed/lit, and the first that I animated fully. It's also much longer than my previous film, which was a challenge to keep the pace up and hold attention for over 10 minutes. I stuck to a very limited set of camera angles, which I think worked for the story, and also allowed me to focus more of my time on animation, because the shots were very long and I wasn't spending time on new setups.

A fun animation fact- the bird was behind a cage wall for the entire film, and this wasn't a digital trick. The front of the cage actually slid open on a drawer-slider, and registered back in place with a magnet. It's a fun solution to a problem that my set designer Winston Hacking came up with.

There are some making-of videos on my website (http://evanderushie.com/birdlime.php), which show some rehearsal "pop-thru" footage, and a look at multiple lighting-passes I used for keying and more. If you have any questions about anything, I'd be happy to answer- the SMA board was such an invaluable resource to me when I was starting out, so I'd love the chance to share info with the community.

Hope you enjoy!

I was wondering about the cage and accessing the puppet...amazing registration. I assumed it was a layer. You gave that funny bird quite a personality. I love the simplicity of design and the colors. The transitions were beautifully done.

I saw teasers of this for so long and I'M SO HAPPY I FINALLY GOT TO SEE IT!

I loved every bit of it. The colouring was phenomenal. The stylized foam characters were also incredibly well done and animated. You were also able to create a sense of a much larger and busier world. Everything was seamless. I already mentioned the animation, but it was just so smooth and subtle and perfect. Thank you so much for creating this to show me what's possible, but also congratulations on completion :)

A real treat, and a complex theme treated so subtly. I did wonder about the severed finger, though!

This is wonderful. It really inspire me.

You got so much character into that bird.  I am interested in hearing your process of creating such a distinct character with a simplified design and no dialogue.  I know it is something we all try to do, and I'd love to hear your take on it.
