Hi all,

I'm prepping to build felt puppets that will probably stand about 3 to 5 inches high (the reason for the range of heights is because I'm going to create more than one character that will be different heights and don't have the space for large puppets). This is new to me, so if I am asking super newbie questions, please bear with me.

What type of armature does one generally use for a puppet this size? I've heard that aluminum is the way to go because it doesn't break as easily or something, but I haven't a clue about what width aluminum wire, nor if there need to be special things about the wire I'll need.

I'm pretty much doing Amazon.com shopping for this project, so if anyone has any links to armature wire they use that's on Amazon, that'd be super helpful. :)

Thank you fr all your help, I look forward to creating this puppet and showing it to you all (but first I have to start :P ).

I don't know if they have armature wire on Amazon or not.  One place in the US that has a range of sizes is Whimsie, in the section called Soft Round Aluminum Wire.

For a 5" tall puppet, I used 1.5mm (1/16th") wire for the legs and spine, and most of the arms.  (A standard size in craft stores that carry armature wire)  That's a bit too thick for the fingers on a puppet that size, so I used wire about 1mm for the hands. (18 gauge, or 0.04 inch, at Whimsie.)

I think Marc Spess has some armature wire for sale at his store at AnimateClay too - probably the 1/16th", but probably not the finer stuff.

Not sure if you can still use the 1/16" wire for a 3" tall puppet, though it is starting to get a bit small for that thickness.  For 2 1/2" to 3" mini puppets (used only for wide shots in a smaller scale, with taller 10 to 12" puppets of the same characters for most shots) I use just the 1mm wire for legs and spine.  Then I use an even finer wire, about 0.6mm, for fingers.
