Howdy y'all!

My name is McKinlay. I work in the model shop at Laika Studios. I've been a professional model maker for 10 years or so and have been at Laika for four. I posted in the "introduce yourself" thread, but I thought I'd give a wave in a couple different sections.

I enjoy helping others out, so feel free to ask me any questions about making models or props. Can't talk too much about things going on at Laika, but I have plenty of other knowledge to share.

I'm also writing an ebook about model making for stop motion, and so may ask some feedback from anyone interested in giving it at some point.

Thanks everyone!

P.S. Since a few people have expressed interested, send me an email at animationmodelshop@gmail.com if you'd like me to let you know when the ebook will be available for purchase. It'll be a few months. I'll give a free copy to the first handful of people who want on the list, in exchange for your initial thoughts and opinions. :)

Hi McKinlay,

Very cool. I was lucky enough to get down to Laika Studios for a tour last year to see the newest film in the works and got to wander around like a kid at Christmas for what seemed like not nearly long enough. It was a magical experience both inspiring and humbling to see such synergy of talent, technology and resources. Your ebook sounds like a great idea for the stop motion enthusiast. Good luck with it.

Cheers, Tim

Hi Mckinlay.

You are very fortunate to be working at Laika.

How hard is it to end up working there?

I would love to find out more about your ebook. I don't mind giving feedback I have a busy brain so always lots to say.  I will write you an email next, although I realise that this post is quite old.

that must have been awesome Tim, I would love to have gone on that tour, I don't get out that much, but that would have been inspiring to see the good guys at work.

James.

Thanks, Tim! The book's still got a ways to go, but I'll keep you posted on my progress. I've got a few other projects in the works that I'm pretty excited to share, as well.

Hey James,

I feel very fortunate to be working at Laika. It is quite difficult to get a foot in the door there. It seems the most effective way is through networking and experience. Building up a resume and portfolio and meeting people in the industry by working at other stop motion studios is going to be your best bet. I know that's easier said than done and will take years of hard work, but that's the difficult thing about this profession. You have to be very dedicated and be prepared to move to where the work is. I know Wes Anderson is working on another stop mo movie in the UK. There's still some occasional projects at Stoopid Buddy and Starburns in LA. I've even heard rumors of Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio being resurrected.

Any input you have about what you'd like to see in the book would be greatly appreciated. I'd really like it to be as helpful and inspiring as possible, rather than just a brain dump of the information I've picked up over the years.

Email is a good way to get a hold of me, but posting ideas and requests here is great, too. I've love to get some open discussions going from everyone interested.

Thanks!

Right on, great stuff. Looking forward to seeing what you have in the works. Have a great day.

Cheers!

Hi McKinlay, I hope I'm not too late!

I'm just out of art school and looking to learn as much as possible about propmaking, what online ressources do you find the most precious when it comes to learn about modelmaking?

Have a nice day
