Hey everyone! I want to start animating, and I need to know what kind of wire I need to make some armatures. I heard that armature wire is good, but there's better alternatives. I saw online that nice armatures cost an exorbinant amount of money, which I don't have. Can someone point me in the right direction here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well you can go find some yourself.

.. Some what ~ ?

To break it down - the best armatures are custom-made, but you'd have to mortgage your house several times to buy those. There are mass-produced kit armatures that really aren't very good - in fact you end up fighting them most of the time, and they're not well designed - big thick wrists or ankles etc.

If you use the right kind of aluminum wire (which is annealed aluminum armature wire sold in art supply stores or craft stores for making sculptures - NOT hard annealed aluminum wire from a hardware store, which will break very fast) you get a much better armature than most of the cheap kits.

There are some better kit armatures that might be as good as a well-made wire armature, but I don't know which ones those are as I make my own and don't pay much attention to the kits.

I leave it to somebody else to list the decent kits.

I am planning a 1:6 scale foam latex puppet, and I have a wire armature made with five thin fingers. Very few puppets I see have more than 4 fingers, which imagine is due to a technical limitation.  I am wondering how hard it would be to align the…Continue
