Lately, I have been using fabric (rough textured fleece and animal prints in particular) to "skin" my stop-motion puppets. So far, I have met with surprising results (see my fabric covered Leopard below). I recently tried using oil cloth, a thin vinyl like material for dinosaur skin. I got terrible results. Does anyone have any tips or ideas on other types of alternative skin material? I get the idea that something in a roll, akin to fabric tape might work, but it would have to take paint. Let me know if you come up with anything. I am ready to skin a Tyrannosaurs, so I am open to suggestions.

I assume you mean alternatives to rubber? Because of course silicone and urethane rubbers are both common alternatives to latex.

If you're determined to use fabric I'd try some different stretch fabrics - there are one-way and two-way stretch fabrics - the two-way of course offering more give. But the stretchiest would probably be pantyhose material.

Curious, why are you against using latex?

Yes, I meant an alternative to rubber. I have done some soft sculpture with pantyhose material, but didn't like the result. It's not that I am against latex or rubber per se (I use it for build up heads, muscles, etc.), it's just that it takes soo long to make and apply latex skin. I also tend to lose a lot from the latex sticking to itself before I even get it on the model. For me, fabric is a breeze compared to latex. It also eliminates of lot of painting. Fabric works great for fur, but a leathery skin, may only be suited for rubber. Just thought I would check to see if anyone had any ideas before I dug out the old texture mold.

Here is a pic of a soft sculpture body, over a ball and socket armature, using pantyhose material for skin. The interior is cotton and pillow stuffing. I finished out the model by adding hulk pants and a zombie head (rear view mirror hanger bought at auto store). The model animated well because there was no friction on the armature. Quick and easy to make, no paint, no rubber. The trade off of course is realism. I have also provided a link to the model in action.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCaHVBmY1Ec

Will from Storm The Castle (see link below) came up with a great compromise. He applies gauze bandage material to the model in lieu of a rubber sheet  He then brushes liquid latex onto the gauze. It makes a great dinosaur skin. Check it out here:
