A Technical Problem with my Microsoft Lifecam Cinema.

Not sure whether any of you guys are going to have a solution to this problem but I'll try anyway.

Okay, so not too long ago I bought my self the Microsoft Lifecam Cinema, great camera, works fine. When I use it with Helium Frog, it doesn't seem to like it too much. If I leave the webcam window open when I open up helium frog it will crash. Now this is a problem because I can't access the webcam at all when I'm in Helium Frog, I can't focus the camera or change any settings if helium frog is open, or any other frame grabbers that I've tried.

When I first started using the camera I noticed this problem and for some reason it would minimize to the system tray, when I clicked on that icon it would just bring up the settings and it was pretty much perfect. Now, this doesn't happen now for some reason, it just decided to stop working that way, that icon is no where to be seen. Once you close out of the program it's closed for good, it doesn't minimize to the tray like it should do.

I think I know why this whole problem happens, and it didn't happen with my previous camera. When you launch the software for the webcam, it takes you straight into live feed. You can't run two separate feeds at once, so I can't have it running in the webcam software and the frame grabber at the same time. With my old camera, when you launched the software it would take you to a tool bar where you could access settings, and start recording or take photos. The old camera didn't bring up the live feed as soon as you launched it, you just got that little tool bar.

I wonder if there is a way to stop it from launching the live feed window straight away? Maybe this is just a problem with Helium Frog and Anasazi (The only two frame grabbers I've tried with my cam).

Would anyone have any idea how to do this? To launch the software without it going straight into live feed?

This is a major problem because I need to be able to adjust settings when I'm animating but I can't because it launches live feed which crashes due to it not being able to do that as the same time as helium frog.

(I'm running windows 7 by the way)

Ok, I think I understand what you're saying. Camera feeds don't like to work in more than one program, and if a program is already using it then when you open your grabber it can't find the feed.

Maybe you can just uninstall it? It shouldn't be necessary - you'll be using the framegrabber as software so no need for the webcam software too. Another possibility is, if the webcam software automatically launches when you switch the camera on or plug it in or whatever, maybe you can just shut it down or force quit it.

That's exactly what I'm saying, but I if I uninstall the software the camera wont work. If I could just somehow figure out a way to access the settings without opening up the live feed.

So yeah, without the software I can't get into my camera settings or even operate the camera at all. Hmmm..

Have you already checked the Helium Frog site? Here's their Problems page: http://www.heliumfrog.net63.net/Helium_Frog/helium_frog_faq/heliumf...

One thing I noticed - it said you need to have DirectX and use that rather than the default Microsoft driver.

If you've already checked everything on that page the next step would be to contact the developer. Unless of course you get lucky and somebody here has had the same problem or knows a solution for it.

When I used a webcam I didn't need any kind of driver for it - the framegrabber was able to operate it entirely - seems weird to me that you need to run 2 different apps at the same time, but I guess that's they way it works in Microsoft (I have a Mac).

Have you tried un-installing and re-installing both? If your combo of software worked without problems previously, maybe one of them has developed a fault.

Alternatively, is it possible to save your camera settings in the camera software? Then, when you open the framegrabber software, maybe your camera settings will remain as you put them?

I'll try your suggestions and I'll get back to you :)

does it happen with monkeyjam too?

i just read your other post (i also have a logitech pro 9000 and c920). maybe it is just how microsoft software works. i know that the logitech software kind of change settings for the other programs you are using, for example skype. can you launch both skype and microsoft webcam software simultaneously?

ah, a different question: does this webcam supports manual focus? this model has a great advantage you can rotate it (which i find nice for stopmotion), different from the logitech webcams...
